Ten provinces along the West Philippine Sea (WPS) were honored as 'champions' for their efforts in safeguarding the maritime domain during the Bayanihan Para sa Kanlurang Dagat ng Pilipinas 2026 summit.

The event, organized by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), recognized Palawan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, Batanes, Batangas, and Pangasinan for their provincial action plans and councils established to support maritime interests.

The summit emphasized unity among local governments, national agencies, and partners to protect the WPS, which is vital for livelihoods, food security, and national sovereignty.

DILG Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla urged Filipinos to set aside political differences to defend maritime rights, while UN support in the form of cold storage facilities was pledged to enhance fisheries and coastal communities' livelihoods.The recognition also marked the 10th anniversary of the 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Award, affirming the Philippines' rights under UNCLOS.

Governors reaffirmed their commitment to sustainable management and defense of the WPS, highlighting its importance as a legacy for future generations.
