Such behavior, while surprising by today’s standards, was not entirely unheard of in the 1970s, when smoking among players and even managers was relatively common in dressing rooms and around the sidelines.Smoking bans in English football stadiums would not be introduced until decades later, in 2004.Osborne was a long-serving goalkeeper for West Bromwich Albion, making over 250 appearances between 1966 and 1977.He was part of the club’s successful era, including their 1968 FA Cup Final victory over Everton.

Known by the nickname “Bionic,” he was recognized for his toughness and resilience, having played with a plastic and metal joint inserted into one of his fingers.

Early in his career, he survived a serious health crisis at age 24, undergoing surgery that removed part of a rib and a lung due to cancer, yet he managed to return to top-flight football.Despite these challenges, he continued playing at a high level for years.Osborne’s life story ended in 1998 when he passed away from lung cancer at the age of 57.
