The remains of 22 additional infants have been discovered at the former St Mary’s mother and baby home in Tuam, Co Galway, bringing the total number of infant remains found at the site to 99 since excavations began in July 2025.

The latest discoveries were made between 1 June and 15 July in an area previously used for vehicle access, with no visible surface indicators of burials.

The Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention Tuam (ODAIT) continues its excavation to identify infants who died at the home between 1925 and 1961.Officials highlighted the challenges of the search, including the proximity of remains and the site’s location within a populated housing estate.

The excavation has revealed the scale of historical neglect and the need for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of these infants.This discovery underscores the ongoing efforts to uncover the truth about the past and provide closure to affected families.
