45 detained as PSG Champions League celebrations in Paris turn disorderly

Paris witnessed large-scale celebrations after Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured their second UEFA Champions League title, defeating Arsenal on penalties in a dramatic final held in Budapest.

Thousands of supporters gathered across the city, particularly along iconic locations such as the Champs-Élysées and near the Arc de Triomphe, to celebrate the historic victory.

While the majority of fans marked the occasion peacefully with flares, chants, and car horns, the situation turned tense in several pockets of the capital.According to the Paris police prefecture, smaller groups engaged in disruptive activities, including vandalism of shops and setting fires.Around 20,000 people had assembled on the Champs-Élysées, prompting a significant police presence to manage the crowds.Despite these efforts, incidents of unrest were reported in multiple areas.A group attempted to storm a police station in the upscale 8th arrondissement, though authorities managed to disperse them swiftly.By around 10 p.m., police had detained 45 individuals in connection with the disturbances. One police officer sustained injuries during the clashes.Additionally, parts of the city’s ring road were temporarily blocked by crowds before being cleared by law enforcement.

Damage to property included a bakery and a restaurant, while barricades made of bicycles had to be removed near the PSG stadium in the 16th arrondissement, where about 1,000 people had gathered.

The incidents come in the backdrop of heightened vigilance by authorities, recalling last year’s celebrations when over 500 arrests were made nationwide following PSG’s first Champions League triumph. This year too, police remained alert to prevent escalation, though sporadic violence still occurred amid otherwise celebratory scenes.
