A new bill backed by 60 US Senators proposes imposing up to 100% tariffs on India and four other nations for purchasing Russian oil.The Sanctioning Russia Act of 2026, supported by President Donald Trump, aims to target countries like China, India, Slovakia, Hungary, and Azerbaijan for their oil imports from Russia.The bill allows the US Trade Representative (USTR) to set tariff rates and includes exemptions for European allies continuing to buy Russian gas.India, the second-largest buyer of Russian crude oil after China, faced a 34% surge in imports in June 2026.The legislation is a softened version of a 2025 bill that initially proposed 500% tariffs.The bill also includes a waiver provision for the US President to exempt countries if it serves national interests.This move comes after the expiration of a general license allowing India to purchase Russian energy without sanctions.
