Steven Skybell reprises Tevye role in Yiddish Fiddler on the Roof at Toronto's Elgin Theatre
A Toronto-based interior redesign project in the city’s east end reimagines a compact family home into a calm, functional, and visually cohesive living space. The homeowners, a young family with a dog, were struggling with an awkward layout, limited storage, and clutter common in urban housing.
Designers Tamara Robbins Griffith and Jess Dybenko of Kerr + Field Interiors led a major transformation focused on improving flow, light, and practicality without sacrificing warmth or character.A key early decision involved relocating a centrally placed powder room that had disrupted the connection between the kitchen and dining areas.Removing it from this high-traffic zone allowed the main floor to open up significantly.
The rear wall of the home was then replaced with large panes of glass and sliding doors, strengthening the visual and physical connection to the outdoors. This shift helped introduce more natural light and supported a nature-inspired palette drawn from surrounding trees and sky.
The home’s colour scheme was influenced by artwork from Toronto artist Steven Nederveen, resulting in a restrained yet expressive combination of deep navy, crisp white, bleached oak, and black stone.
Throughout the house, storage solutions were carefully integrated, including custom floor-to-ceiling millwork wardrobes at both the front and rear entrances to manage everyday clutter.
In the kitchen, an appliance “garage” concealed behind pocket doors allows devices like a coffee maker and toaster to be hidden when not in use, maintaining a clean aesthetic.
The living room features a dramatic black-veined stone fireplace wall, while the staircase combines oak, glass, and white finishes to maintain openness and light flow.Custom furnishings were also designed specifically for the space to ensure precise fit and functionality.
Overall, the project balances modern minimalism with livable comfort, prioritizing thoughtful storage, material cohesion, and a strong connection to nature.
