ABC is bringing back its iconic series Race Around the World, more than 25 years after its original run.The show, which originally aired in 1997, sent aspiring filmmakers around the globe with minimal equipment and instructions, challenging them to produce a short documentary every ten days.

This 2026 revival sees Take Five’s Zan Rowe taking the hosting reins, joined by guest judges including Claudia Karvan and the legendary Margaret Pomeranz, alongside John Safran, a standout from the original series.

Unlike the 90s version, contestants will now discover their next destination only at the end of each episode, adding an element of surprise while keeping safety in mind through modern technology.The six current racers are already on the move, with destinations ranging from Alaska to India.The series aims to foster emerging talent, offering the winner a chance to produce a film project for ABC.Rowe reflects on how transformative the original show was, launching careers in filmmaking, documentary, and television production.Race Around the World premieres on Sunday, 7 June at 7.30pm on ABC, promising a mix of adventure, creativity, and high-stakes storytelling.
