African Journalists Tour Ukraine and Moldova to Report on War Impacts and Food Security

A delegation of journalists from seven African countries has completed a study visit to Ukraine and Moldova to gain first-hand understanding of the ongoing effects of the Russia-Ukraine war.

The media team included reporters from Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, Ethiopia, Senegal, and Tanzania, reflecting increasing African interest in global conflicts and their indirect consequences.

The visit aimed to provide more direct reporting beyond international news agencies and allow African journalists to observe the situation on the ground.

While in Ukraine, the journalists toured areas affected by military operations, including regions experiencing damage to infrastructure and civilian displacement. They engaged with local communities who are dealing with the challenges of rebuilding their lives amid ongoing conflict.

The delegation also visited agricultural and logistical facilities such as grain storage sites and ports to understand how the war has disrupted Ukraine’s role as a key global supplier of wheat, corn, and sunflower oil. These disruptions have had direct consequences on African countries, contributing to rising food prices and supply shortages. In Moldova, the journalists observed the country’s role as a refuge for displaced Ukrainians and its strain on limited national resources.Moldova’s position as a transit hub for humanitarian aid and refugees has further highlighted the regional impact of the conflict.

The journalists also met government officials, civil society actors, and residents to gather diverse perspectives on the war and its wider geopolitical implications.

The visit is part of broader efforts to improve balanced reporting and reduce misinformation about the conflict, while also highlighting how global crises affect Africa through trade, energy, and food systems. The experience is expected to help shape more informed reporting across African media outlets.
