Albanese begins Pacific diplomacy tour with Fiji security pact and regional talks

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has begun a three-day diplomatic visit across the Pacific, starting in Fiji where he is expected to sign a new security agreement known as the Vuvale Union with Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

The agreement forms part of Australia's broader strategy to strengthen relationships with Pacific nations while responding to China's growing influence across the region.

Following the Fiji visit, Albanese will travel to the Solomon Islands to continue negotiations on a comprehensive bilateral treaty with recently elected Prime Minister Matthew Wale.

Wale has indicated his government intends to review the Solomon Islands' existing security agreement with China and rebuild relations with Australia after several years of strained ties.

The diplomatic programme will conclude in Brisbane, where Albanese will meet the leaders of Papua New Guinea and Tonga during the State of Origin decider to discuss regional security, trade and economic development.

The Australian government views these meetings as an opportunity to reinforce cooperation with Pacific partners on shared strategic and economic priorities.

Since coming to office in 2022, the Albanese government has negotiated security and cooperation agreements with several Pacific nations, including Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Nauru and Papua New Guinea.

These arrangements typically combine Australian financial assistance and expanded visa opportunities with commitments that limit China's involvement in strategically significant infrastructure and defence activities.

Separately, Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett will promote the proposed PACPOL regional policing bloc at United Nations meetings, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Australia later in the week to discuss stronger defence cooperation and expanded uranium trade, further highlighting Australia's increasing diplomatic focus on the Indo-Pacific region.
