MS NOW anchor Ali Velshi shared a critical reflection on the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, expressing discomfort with how the milestone is being celebrated.

Speaking on his program, Velshi argued that national anniversaries often present incomplete narratives that overlook deeper historical realities, particularly the country’s legacy of racial injustice.

He noted that America’s founding is tied to unresolved issues, including slavery and systemic discrimination, which continue to shape modern political and social dynamics.

Velshi described a “deep unease” about participating in commemorations of what he referred to as a “so-called democracy,” pointing to ongoing concerns about civil rights and political representation.

He highlighted issues such as the rollback of voting rights protections, the weakening of the Voting Rights Act, and continued partisan gerrymandering in several states.According to Velshi, these practices disproportionately affect Black Americans and contribute to an imbalance in political power.

He also referenced the broader societal tension surrounding the celebration, suggesting that while American ideals such as democracy and equality are worth honoring, the country has not fully confronted its historical injustices.

Velshi emphasized that conflicting feelings about national pride and historical accountability are common among Americans, especially as the anniversary approaches.Born in Kenya, raised in Canada, and a U.S.citizen since 2015, Velshi said he understands why some people feel hesitant about fully embracing the celebrations.
