A growing number of U.S.drivers are switching from premium gasoline to regular to save money, despite the latter being less optimal for high-performance vehicles.

Data from fuel cash-back app Upside shows that between June 22nd and June 25th, premium gasoline sales dropped nearly 5% compared to pre-war levels, while regular gasoline sales rose by 10%.This trend reflects broader consumer behavior as fuel prices remain elevated following the Iran war.

Experts note that drivers of luxury or high-horsepower vehicles, which typically require premium fuel, are also opting for lower-grade gas to cut costs.

For example, Carlo Santos, who switched from a Tesla Model 3 to a Ford Mustang, found his fuel costs skyrocketed after the Iran conflict, prompting him to revert to an electric vehicle.Automakers warn that using lower octane fuel can reduce horsepower and efficiency, risking engine damage.Meanwhile, the gap between premium and regular gas prices has reached an all-time high, with regular averaging $3.81 per gallon and premium at $4.70.Analysts predict the price difference could widen further, exacerbating financial strain on consumers.
