Nigeria’s security forces, including one of Africa’s largest militaries and a police force of roughly one officer per 600 citizens, are overstretched and struggling to maintain control.Many rural communities only have remnants of government presence, such as abandoned police posts or poorly functioning schools and clinics.International cooperation, including U.S.military assistance and targeted strikes against extremist leaders, has had limited impact on curbing violence.

The combination of weak governance, limited security resources, and active extremist groups has solidified Nigeria’s position as a hotspot of insecurity in the Sahel region, with significant implications for both domestic stability and regional security.
