ANC Expels Councillor Over Alleged DA Spying Allegations

The African National Congress (ANC) in the eThekwini Region has expelled Ward 8 councillor Marco Mbambo, accusing him of spying for the Democratic Alliance (DA) and planning to defect to the opposition party. The expulsion was announced by ANC eThekwini Regional Task Team (RTT) coordinator Thanduxolo Sabelo during a media briefing in Musgrave, Durban.Mbambo's membership with the ANC and his role as a public representative in Ward 8 have been terminated.

Sabelo stated that the ANC established Mbambo had been acting as a spy for the DA while serving as an ANC councillor and intended to join the DA while still holding his position. The ANC claims Mbambo admitted to the allegations after being presented with evidence, leading to his immediate expulsion. The party emphasized that it will replace Mbambo with a proportional representation (PR) councillor to restore service delivery in Ward 8.

Sabelo warned that more expulsions are expected as the ANC seeks to root out alleged spies and sleeper agents ahead of the November 2026 local government elections. The ANC reiterated its stance against internal sabotage, stating that members must choose allegiance to the party or the opposition. The incident highlights ongoing tensions within the ANC regarding loyalty and internal security.
