Legal experts say Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala review application has merit amid impeachment scrutiny
The African National Congress (ANC) has reportedly failed to meet Parliament’s deadline for submitting the names of Members of Parliament who will serve on the Phala Phala impeachment committee.
The delay comes amid internal disagreements within the party’s senior leadership over who should be deployed to the committee and how the process should be managed.
According to well-placed sources within both the ANC and Parliament, the party missed the 22 May deadline set by National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza.
The dispute is said to centre on tensions between ANC Chief Whip Mdumiseni Ntuli and Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, who have differed on the composition and control of the party’s representation on the committee.
These disagreements have reportedly slowed down the ANC’s internal decision-making process at a time when Parliament is preparing to proceed with the impeachment inquiry linked to allegations involving President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Phala Phala matter. At the same time, additional tensions have emerged between Speaker Thoko Didiza and Democratic Alliance parliamentary leader George Michalakis.
The DA has accused the Speaker of potentially compromising the integrity of the impeachment process, alleging that discussions around a Constitutional Court judgement were held in ANC-related meetings that included party lawyers.
The situation highlights broader political friction within Parliament as parties navigate a highly sensitive and politically charged impeachment process.
The ANC’s inability to finalise its delegation on time is likely to draw further scrutiny, particularly given the high-profile nature of the Phala Phala matter and its implications for the Presidency. The unfolding dispute reflects both procedural challenges and deeper political divisions within the ruling party.
