ANC's Leadership Challenges and South Africa's Political Future
The ANC is intensifying its campaign for the November 4, 2026 Local Government Elections, focusing on five key municipalities in the Western Cape to challenge the DA's control.
ANC Western Cape Provincial Task Team Convenor Jerimia Thuynsma outlined the party's strategy, emphasizing the selection of ethical and community-centred leaders through rigorous candidate vetting processes. The NEC is directly overseeing mayoral candidate interviews in Cape Town, Drakenstein, Stellenbosch, Saldanha Bay, and Laingsberg.
Thuynsma highlighted the ANC's priorities, including improving municipal service delivery, addressing learner placement crises, and tackling gang violence in the Cape Flats.
The party also called for enhanced coordination between law enforcement agencies and the military in gang hotspots, while urging the restoration of non-functional CCTV cameras in Khayelitsha. The ANC aims to win back municipalities by fielding credible candidates and prioritizing service delivery in its election manifesto.
The strategy underscores the ANC's commitment to addressing constitutional obligations related to spatial apartheid and social housing, as highlighted by the recent Constitutional Court judgment on the Tafelberg school site sale.
