Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (Idac) head Andrea Johnson has firmly denied allegations that the corruption case against police crime intelligence head Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo was politically motivated.

During testimony at the Madlanga commission of inquiry, Johnson dismissed claims by KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that the investigation into Khumalo's alleged corruption was a tactic to delay serious organised crime probes.

Khumalo, who leads the political killings task team (PKTT), faces charges related to the employment of an unqualified civilian in a senior position within the South African Police Service crime intelligence unit.

Johnson clarified that her office's investigation into Khumalo was focused on his conduct as divisional commissioner of crime intelligence, not his role in PKTT.

She also refuted accusations that Idac overstepped its mandate by investigating top police officials, stating the case fell under their authority to address systemic issues within the crime intelligence unit.The probe originated from a referral by MP Fadiel Adams, highlighting concerns about improper appointments and funding access within the department.
