Army Chief urges South-East leaders and parents to encourage youths to enlist as recruitment quotas remain unfilled

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen.Olufemi Oluyede, has appealed to parents, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other community stakeholders in Nigeria's South-East to encourage qualified young people to join the Nigerian Army.

Speaking through Major General Chima Ekeator during a stakeholders' engagement in Umuahia, Abia State, the Army Chief expressed concern that states in the region have continued to record low participation during recruitment exercises.

According to him, the Nigerian Army allocates recruitment slots to every state to ensure fair representation across the country, but many of the slots assigned to South-East states are often left vacant because not enough eligible applicants come forward.

He explained that any unfilled positions are eventually taken by qualified candidates from other parts of Nigeria, reducing the region's representation within the military.

Oluyede stressed that the recruitment process is transparent, merit-based and open to all eligible Nigerians, urging young people not to be discouraged by rumours or misinformation about enlistment.

He also highlighted the benefits of military service, including professional training, career development, education opportunities, healthcare, accommodation and other welfare packages.

The Army Chief said stronger participation from the South-East would improve the region's presence in the armed forces while also creating employment opportunities for many young people.

His appeal comes as the Nigerian Army continues its nationwide recruitment exercise and encourages interested applicants to apply only through the official recruitment channels.
