Arteta calls for decisive action after Arsenal’s Champions League defeat
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has called on the club’s hierarchy to make fast, smart, and bold decisions if the team is to continue its progress after a painful Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.The final, played in Budapest, ended in heartbreak for Arsenal as they lost on penalties after extra time.Arsenal had started strongly, taking an early lead through Kai Havertz, who scored just six minutes into the match.
However, PSG gradually took control of possession and equalised in the 65th minute through an Ousmane Dembele penalty, forcing the game into extra time and eventually a penalty shootout.PSG dominated overall play with about 72 percent possession compared to Arsenal’s 28 percent, creating many more attacking opportunities and passes.
Despite strong defensive performances from Gabriel and William Saliba, Arsenal could not hold on, and Gabriel missed a crucial penalty in the shootout.
Arteta admitted that the club now needs to reflect and review their performance after a few days with his family before making key decisions for the future. He stressed that to reach the next level, Arsenal must show greater ambition and act quickly and intelligently in rebuilding.Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard and midfielder Declan Rice also expressed disappointment, agreeing that small margins decided the final outcome.
Arteta also mentioned a possible missed penalty in extra time involving Noni Madueke but refused to use it as an excuse, saying the team must focus on improving rather than blaming incidents.
Despite the defeat, Arsenal recently secured their first English domestic title in 22 years, showing progress under Arteta, but the manager insists more work is needed to become a dominant force in Europe.
