Australia and India finalise uranium export agreement
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have announced a comprehensive agreement to deepen bilateral relations across trade, education, defence, science and technology.
The partnership, framed as 'top-tier' security cooperation, includes commitments to enhance maritime security collaboration, cyber and critical technologies partnerships, and expanded Australian university campuses in India.
A key focus is bolstering Indo-Pacific stability amid regional tensions, with Albanese highlighting China's recent missile tests as a destabilising factor.
The agreement also marks the resumption of uranium exports to India for peaceful purposes under the 2015 nuclear cooperation pact, addressing previous export restrictions due to safeguards concerns.
Australia's universities will establish new campuses in India, expanding educational ties while maintaining strict visa policies for international students.
Tech collaborations include a trilateral innovation partnership with Canada and support for India's space program via a tracking terminal on Cocos Keeling Islands.
