Socceroos narrowly lose to Mexico in final pre-World Cup friendly
Australia’s head coach Tony Popovic has confirmed the Socceroos’ 26-player squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring a mix of experienced internationals and a large group of debutants.
A standout inclusion is Cristian Volpato, who recently switched his international allegiance from Italy to Australia and earns selection before making his senior debut.Uncapped striker Tete Yengi has also been included, highlighting Popovic’s willingness to back emerging talent.
The squad includes seasoned players such as captain Mathew Ryan and veteran Mathew Leckie, both set to appear at their fourth World Cup, providing leadership and experience.
In total, 17 players in the squad will be making their World Cup debut, including 18-year-old defender Lucas Herrington, signalling a generational transition within the national team.Several notable omissions have drawn attention, including Martin Boyle, Kye Rowles, Brandon Borrello and goalkeeper Joe Gauci.Popovic acknowledged the difficulty of the selection process, noting that multiple factors influenced the final decisions.Australia recently played a friendly against Mexico, and will face Switzerland in another warm-up match before beginning their World Cup campaign.
The Socceroos are set to open their tournament against Türkiye on 14 June in Vancouver, followed by matches against the United States in Seattle on 20 June and Paraguay in Santa Clara on 26 June.Tournament regulations require squads to include between 23 and 26 players, with final lists submitted to FIFA by 1 June. The governing body will formally confirm all squads shortly after.
Overall, the selection reflects a balance between continuity and renewal, as Australia aims to build on past performances while introducing new talent to the global stage.
