Austrian sentenced for planning foiled terror attack on Taylor Swift concert

An Austrian court has handed a 21-year-old a 15-year jail sentence after he admitted to planning a jihadist attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna. The plot, which led to the cancellation of three shows on Swift's Eras tour in 2024, was foiled with assistance from US intelligence.

The man, identified as Beran A under Austrian privacy laws, pleaded guilty to most charges, including membership of a terror organisation and sharing Islamic State propaganda, though he denied being an accomplice to attempted murder.

He targeted the packed Ernst Happel Stadium, sought advice on bomb-making and weapons, and was part of a cell with Hasan E and Arda K, who were accused of planning multiple attacks.Hasan E is imprisoned in Saudi Arabia for stabbing a security official in Mecca.During the trial, Beran A appeared emotional while receiving his sentence and apologised for his actions. His lawyer argued he was not an ideological mastermind.Arda K received a 12-year sentence, and all sentences remain subject to appeal.Swift later expressed that the cancellations caused her fear and guilt due to fans’ anticipation of the shows. The case highlights ongoing global vigilance against IS-inspired terror threats.
