Kenyan-born footballer Awer Mabil has been included in Australia’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking his second appearance at the global tournament.
Mabil, who was born on 15 September 1995 at the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, has a background rooted in displacement, as his South Sudanese parents fled civil war before settling in the camp.He later moved to Australia at the age of 10, where he began developing his football talent.
His journey in professional football has been impressive, starting from youth football in Adelaide and progressing through clubs such as Campbelltown City and Adelaide United in the A-League.
In 2015, he moved to Europe to join Danish side Midtjylland, where he featured in major continental competitions including the Europa League and Champions League.
Over the years, he has gained experience across several leagues through loan spells and transfers, including stints in Denmark, Portugal, Turkey, Spain, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland.He currently plays for CD Castellón in Spain’s second division.Internationally, Mabil represents Australia and has earned 37 caps, scoring 10 goals for the Socceroos.He was part of Australia’s squad at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the team reached the Round of 16 before being eliminated by Argentina.His inclusion in the 2026 squad reflects his continued importance to the national team setup under coach Tony Popovic.Australia will compete in Group D alongside the United States, Turkey, and Paraguay.Mabil joins a squad that also includes experienced goalkeeper Matt Ryan and midfielder Cristian Volpato.The selection highlights both his consistency at club level and his resilience in rising from a refugee camp in Kenya to the world football stage.
