Axl Rose Poses with Early Mobile Phone at Sunset Grill in 1988
On July 12, 1992, Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose was arrested at John F.Kennedy International Airport in New York after returning from a European tour.
The arrest stemmed from an outstanding warrant connected to the 'Riverport Riot,' a chaotic incident during a 1991 concert in Maryland Heights, Missouri. The disturbance began when Axl tried to stop a fan from taking unauthorized photographs during the song 'Rocket Queen.' Frustrated with security, he jumped into the crowd to seize the camera, which led to him leaving the stage mid-performance.The sudden end to the concert sparked a riot, causing dozens of injuries and significant property damage. After evading authorities while touring Europe, Axl was met by U.S.Customs and police upon landing at JFK.He faced four counts of third-degree assault and one count of property damage. His legal team argued the arrest was unnecessary since he planned to surrender voluntarily later that week.Ultimately, he was extradited to Missouri and, in November 1992, found guilty of assault and property damage but cleared of inciting a riot.He received two years of probation and was ordered to donate $50,000 to local community organizations.Guns N’ Roses would not return to St.Louis until 2017, 26 years after the incident.
