Tanzania's Government and NGOs Collaborate to Align Projects with Vision 2050
The Bagamoyo District Council in Tanzania has allocated 800 million shillings to construct specialized educational facilities at Nianjema Primary School, aiming to enhance inclusive education for children with disabilities and special learning needs.
The project, set to start in August 2026, includes building an Educational Support, Resource and Assessment Centre, teachers’ residences, and a dining hall. These facilities will improve learning conditions and support systems for students facing educational challenges.
Ms Wema Kajigili, the council’s Pre-Primary and Primary Education Officer, highlighted the initiative during a meeting to assess accountability in implementing the National Strategy for Inclusive Education (2021/22–2026).The strategy ensures equal educational opportunities for all children, regardless of physical or learning challenges.
The meeting, organized by OCODE, emphasized collaboration with partners like OCODE to address the needs of learners with disabilities and those experiencing learning difficulties.Currently, 369 children with disabilities are enrolled in pre-primary and primary schools in Bagamoyo. The new centre will aid early identification, assessment, and support services for these learners.
OCODE’s Sauti Zetu Project, supported by HakiElimu, has trained teachers to use inclusive education guidelines, enabling them to identify disabilities and refer students for specialized services.Despite challenges, officials remain optimistic about expanding these interventions to all schools in the district.
The project underscores Tanzania’s commitment to inclusive education and vulnerable student populations, relying on collaboration between government, civil society, and international partners.
