BBC 6 Music launches 'Indie Forever' stream celebrating UK indie music history

BBC Radio 6 Music has unveiled its new BBC Sounds extension 'Indie Forever', a 24-hour stream dedicated to indie pop, rock, and classics from the 1980s to the 2010s.

Launching on July 22, the stream will feature UK artists comprising 70% of the playlist, including iconic acts like The Stone Roses, Oasis, Blur, Pulp, The Verve, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Florence + The Machine, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The xx, Wolf Alice, The 1975, Sam Fender, and Blossoms.

The initiative includes 'The Morning Session' with Steve Lamacq and Felix White, a homage to Radio 1’s legendary Evening Session, and a collaboration with Music Venue Trust called 'City Soundtracks', exploring grassroots indie scenes across the UK.

The stream will also feature Beth Ditto’s 'Indie Forever Disco' on weekends, classic episodes of Jarvis Cocker’s 'Sunday Service', and archive material from bands like The Smiths and Oasis.

Samantha Moy, Head of BBC Radio 6 Music, emphasized the stream’s role in celebrating 40 years of UK independent music through curated content and historic performances. This launch follows BBC 6 Music’s 2026 festival in Manchester, where Bloc Party debuted new material.

The project underscores the station’s commitment to preserving and promoting indie music heritage while supporting emerging artists in grassroots venues.
