BBC Seeks Financial Records From Trump in Ongoing $10 Billion Defamation Lawsuit

A dispute over evidence discovery has emerged in President Donald Trump's ongoing $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC.Trump filed the lawsuit after alleging that the broadcaster deceptively edited a documentary concerning his role in the January 6 Capitol riot, claiming that the program caused significant financial and reputational damage.

As part of the legal process, BBC attorneys requested documents from Trump's trust, which reportedly holds a substantial portion of his business assets, in order to evaluate and verify the damages claims made in the lawsuit.Trump's legal team objected to the request, arguing that it was overly broad, disproportionate, and unrelated to the central issues of the case.

According to court filings cited in the report, Trump's lawyers contended that complying with the request would require producing tens of thousands of documents within an unreasonable timeframe and characterized the BBC's request as a 'fishing expedition.

' The disagreement has drawn attention because the BBC reportedly responded to more than 500 document requests from Trump's legal team and had already provided approximately 45,000 pages of records. The report states that, as of May, Trump's side had not produced the requested records.

Separately, the BBC continues to challenge the lawsuit itself, arguing that the documentary did not damage Trump's reputation and noting that it aired shortly before his reelection.

The broadcaster has also argued that the case should be dismissed because the documentary was not broadcast in the United States or in Florida, raising questions about whether the court has jurisdiction over the matter. The jurisdictional challenge remains under consideration while the litigation continues.
