The Borno State government has revealed a 15-second video showing 36 school students still held captive by terrorists in Lassa, Borno, nearly three weeks after their abduction.
The video, played during the Borno State Education Summit in Maiduguri, shows students seated on the ground with some in their school uniforms, while two armed terrorists stand behind them holding an Arabic flag.
Commissioner Abba Wakilbe confirmed the students were kidnapped on June 29 during attacks on communities in the Lassa axis, with 25 girls and 11 boys currently in captivity.Authorities have yet to confirm details about students abducted earlier from Mussa Community.
Wakilbe warned that attacks on schools remain a major threat to education in Borno, risking years of progress in access to education, especially for girls.The disclosure comes amid renewed concerns over school attacks in northern Nigeria, years after the 2014 Chibok abduction.Recent incidents, including the abduction of NECO exam candidates in Kogi State, have reignited calls for stronger security around schools.
The Borno government claims 78 students are currently held captive following separate abductions, highlighting ongoing challenges in securing education in conflict-affected areas.
