Wildfire Smoke Causes Orange Skies and High Air Quality Alerts in Kamloops
The owner of Blue Lake Resort near Boston Bar, B.C., says a significant portion of his property has been destroyed as the Brunswick complex wildfires continue to burn across the Fraser Canyon.
Shayne Findlay said he first realized that buildings had been lost by watching a webcam, but the full extent of the damage only became clear when he visited the site.He described a landscape transformed by fire, with burned hillsides, destroyed trailers and widespread debris.
Among the structures lost were a cabin built by his father, another cabin he built himself, staff accommodation, storage buildings and several trailers.Despite the personal losses, Findlay acknowledged that many others in the region have also been affected by the fires and the ongoing evacuations.
He has decided to close the resort for the remainder of the summer so recovery efforts can begin, noting that extensive work will be required to remove dangerous trees before cleanup can safely start.
According to Findlay, strong and unpredictable winds played a major role in the rapid spread and intensity of the fires, making it difficult to protect buildings as embers travelled in multiple directions.
The Brunswick complex, which includes the Brunswick Creek and Ainslie Creek wildfires, had grown to nearly 200 square kilometres by Wednesday night, prompting evacuation orders, evacuation alerts and the closure of part of Highway 1.A third, much smaller wildfire nearby was declared extinguished on Thursday morning.Provincial officials say all three fires are suspected to have been human-caused.
Forests Minister Ravi Parmar praised wildfire crews for their efforts under challenging conditions, explaining that strong winds have also limited the use of aerial firefighting resources. He encouraged residents to use the B.C.Wildfire Service app for the latest wildfire information and emergency updates.
