British woman dies from injuries after southern Spain wildfire, raising death toll to 13

A 93-year-old British woman has died in hospital after suffering severe burns during the devastating wildfire that swept through the Los Gallardos area of Almería in southern Spain.

Her death raises the confirmed number of fatalities from the disaster to 13, making it one of the country's deadliest wildfire incidents in recent years.

According to the Andalusian regional government, the woman had been admitted to hospital with burns covering around 20% of her body and also had serious pre-existing medical conditions.She was among eight people injured in the blaze, several of whom sustained serious injuries.The wildfire burned more than 7,000 hectares after breaking out in the province of Almería, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,000 residents.

Although emergency services have now contained the fire and many evacuees have been allowed to return home, authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the people still reported missing.

Spanish forensic teams are working with authorities in the United Kingdom, Belgium and France to help identify victims and locate missing people, including through international DNA collection where necessary.

Regional officials have expressed condolences to the families affected and have urged residents and visitors to remain vigilant as Andalusia continues to experience an active wildfire season, with high temperatures and dry conditions increasing the risk of further fires.

The tragedy has highlighted the severe impact of extreme wildfires on communities and the importance of following emergency guidance during rapidly evolving fire events.
