Roberto Martinez says Cristiano Ronaldo could still feature for Portugal at the 2030 World Cup
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has expressed strong confidence that striker Lyle Foster will recover his form and confidence in time for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Foster, who recently returned to the starting line-up in a friendly against Nicaragua, endured a difficult outing after missing a crucial penalty in the first half, a moment that contributed to South Africa’s goalless draw. The forward was substituted at half-time, with Broos clarifying that the change was technical rather than purely tactical.
Broos acknowledged that Foster is currently struggling with confidence and physical sharpness, pointing to limited playing time at club level with Burnley following managerial changes and the club’s relegation to the English Championship.
Despite the setback, Broos remained optimistic, stating that the national team has sufficient time before the World Cup to rebuild Foster’s morale and sharpen his attacking effectiveness.
He emphasised that Foster is not solely responsible for the team’s lack of goals, noting that Bafana Bafana as a whole has struggled with finishing in recent months.Other forwards such as Evidence Makgopa and Iqraam Rayners were also mentioned as part of the solution to improve the team’s attacking output.
Broos also downplayed the negative reaction from fans who booed Foster after the penalty miss, saying supporters are emotional and can quickly change their attitude.
He stressed that the team will use the remaining preparation period to improve efficiency in front of goal, with several weeks of training available before the tournament.
Overall, the coach remains confident that South Africa can address its scoring issues and arrive at the World Cup with a more effective attacking unit.
