Calgary begins redevelopment of Olympic Plaza as part of downtown revitalization plan

Construction has officially begun on the transformation of Calgary’s Olympic Plaza, marking a major milestone in the city’s ongoing downtown revitalization efforts.

The project, led by the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) in collaboration with the Werklund Centre, the City of Calgary, and the Government of Alberta, aims to modernize the historic public space nearly 40 years after it was originally built for the 1988 Winter Olympics medal ceremonies. The original plaza was demolished in late 2024 to make way for a redesigned, more accessible and flexible urban gathering space.

The redevelopment, valued at approximately $70 million, will introduce a new pavilion featuring food and beverage services, public washrooms, and expanded green space. The redesigned plaza will also be capable of hosting large-scale public events with capacities of up to 5,000 people.Seasonal adaptability is a key feature, with plans for a splash pad in warmer months that can be converted into a skating rink during winter.

A prominent design element will be a 12-metre-tall structure inspired by the ‘sunflake’, the emblem of the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, intended to preserve the site’s Olympic legacy.

The project is also part of a broader $660 million expansion of the adjacent Werklund Centre, which includes new theatre facilities and cultural infrastructure expected to be completed by 2028.

City officials have described the redevelopment as part of a wider “ecosystem of change” in downtown Calgary, which includes office-to-residential conversions, renovations to cultural institutions, and improvements to public streetscapes.

While the construction is expected to bring temporary disruption to the downtown core, civic leaders have emphasized long-term benefits, including increased vibrancy, improved public space, and stronger economic activity supported by significant public and private investment in the area.
