Canada's Public Health Agency confirmed that one Canadian who recently returned from a cruise ship affected by a hantavirus outbreak has tested positive for the virus.The case involves a person in their 70s from Yukon, who was hospitalized in Victoria along with a traveling partner, who tested negative.Four Canadian passengers from the cruise ship MV Hondius returned to British Columbia last Sunday, all of whom are currently in isolation.The outbreak on the ship has resulted in three deaths, including a Dutch couple who are believed to have contracted the virus in South America.To date, ten people from the ship, including the Canadian patient, have tested positive for hantavirus.
Health officials emphasize that the overall risk to the general Canadian population remains low, as all confirmed cases are limited to passengers or crew from the cruise ship.
Canadian authorities are monitoring the situation and taking precautionary measures to protect citizens while continuing investigations and testing at the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg.
