Canada implements travel restrictions for foreign nationals visiting Congo amid Ebola outbreak

Canada has introduced new travel restrictions to prevent the spread of Ebola, barring foreign nationals who have visited the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the past 21 days from entering the country. The Public Health Agency of Canada announced this measure on July 19, 2026, with the rule taking effect at 11:59 p.m.on July 20.Commercial and private air carriers will now be prohibited from allowing such individuals to board flights to Canada.

This policy aims to reduce public health risks and enhance border measures for safe traveler processing, including humanitarian workers returning to Canada. The decision marks a shift from previous protocols, which required travelers from Ebola-affected regions to self-isolate for 21 days.

Unlike the earlier measures, this new rule does not apply to citizens, permanent residents, or those registered under the Indian Act, who will still be permitted entry but must undergo health assessments and self-isolate upon arrival.Over 2,181 cases and 864 deaths have been reported in the DRC’s ongoing Ebola outbreak. The restrictions align with similar bans imposed by the U.S.and Mexico, which also barred travelers from affected regions. These measures remain in place until August 29, balancing public health concerns with travel accessibility.
