Tanzania trains water experts to protect small reservoirs
Water experts in Tanzania have undergone specialized training to enhance their skills in monitoring and protecting the quality of water in small reservoirs.
This initiative, organized by the Ministry of Water, focuses on strengthening the design, management, and long-term sustainability of small dams and informal water sources through innovative technologies and community-based approaches.
The program supports the National Water Policy 2002 (2025 Edition), aiming to expand access to safe water services in rural areas and achieve formal water infrastructure for all villages by 2030.Collaboration between government agencies, research institutions, and civil society organizations is central to implementing this project.Small reservoirs and dams are critical water sources for livestock, irrigation, and domestic use, especially in semi-arid regions. However, they face threats like nutrient runoff, livestock waste, poor land management, and erratic rainfall linked to climate change.
The training equips experts with skills in water quality assessment, reservoir monitoring, improved design techniques, and community engagement to ensure sustainable water services. This effort aligns with national goals to reduce health risks, boost productivity, and meet the 2030 target for rural water access.
