Cape Town launches winter holiday programme for youth across libraries and recreation centres

Cape Town’s City authorities have announced the launch of a winter holiday programme aimed at keeping young people engaged and active during the school break, starting on 26 June 2026.

The initiative will be hosted across a wide network of municipal facilities, including libraries, community centres, sports grounds, play parks and other public green spaces.

The Recreation and Parks Department has designed a varied programme that includes sports activities, indoor games, and recreational events intended to encourage physical activity and social interaction among youth.

In parallel, public libraries across the city will offer educational and creative sessions such as reading challenges, coding workshops, and even cookie-making activities, ensuring a balance between learning and leisure.

These programmes are intended to provide safe, supervised environments where children and teenagers can spend their holidays productively while staying away from unsafe or idle situations.City officials emphasised the importance of these initiatives in supporting child development and community wellbeing.Councillor Francine Higham noted that the winter break presents an opportunity for young people to explore new interests and develop new skills.

Councillor Patricia van der Ross also encouraged parents and guardians to actively support participation, highlighting the role of play and structured activities in healthy development.

Residents are encouraged to consult their nearest library or recreation facility, or visit the City of Cape Town’s official website, for full schedules and programme details.
