A Chatsworth couple, both aged 31, have been sentenced to life imprisonment in the Durban Regional Court for the prolonged abuse, torture, and neglect of a 10-year-old girl who had been placed in the woman’s care after their mother’s death.The woman received a double life sentence, while her husband was also sentenced to life imprisonment for acting in common purpose.

The court found the woman guilty on multiple serious charges, including attempted murder, child abuse, child neglect, compelled self-sexual assault, and intimidation.Additional charges related to separate incidents involving threats and violence against other family members.Her husband was convicted of child abuse, neglect, attempted murder, and intimidation.

Magistrate Queen Khuzwayo described the abuse as sustained, calculated, and deeply disturbing, emphasising that it took place in what should have been a safe family environment.

The child’s testimony was found to be highly credible, consistent, and reflective of lived trauma despite her young age and the prolonged nature of the abuse.Evidence presented in court detailed severe physical and psychological abuse over several years.The child endured repeated assaults with various objects, burns from boiling water, stabbing, and being suspended upside down.She was also deprived of food, medical care, and basic dignity, and subjected to ongoing threats, including having petrol poured over her.The abuse came to light in August 2023 when the child managed to escape through a bathroom window and seek help from a friend.The couple were arrested shortly afterwards and have remained in custody since.Both indicated they do not intend to appeal their sentences.The court noted that the severity and duration of the abuse justified the harsh sentences imposed.
