Chatsworth man charged with bestiality found fit to stand trial and released on bail

A Chatsworth father named Joseph Driman, aged 58, appeared in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court after being charged with bestiality. The court previously ordered a mental evaluation to check if he was fit to stand trial. On Monday, it was confirmed by a district surgeon that Driman is indeed fit to face the charges. He was then granted bail of R500.This decision has sparked strong outrage among local animal rights activists who demanded that he remain in custody.

Driman was arrested last Wednesday after neighbours witnessed him allegedly sexually assaulting a neighbour’s dog in Welbedacht West and reported the incident to the police.

Activists like Pat Naidoo expressed deep concern over rising cases of animal abuse in the area, including cruelty, abandonment, neglect, and bestiality. They believe the court should have set a strong example by denying bail to protect other animals.

Naidoo warned pet owners against giving away their animals to strangers, advising them instead to use the SPCA or rescue shelters for proper rehoming.

Barbara Patrick from Kloof and Highway SPCA thanked the public for reporting the case and stated they will attend all court appearances to represent the dog named Black. The case has been postponed to next month for further investigations.

This incident highlights ongoing issues with animal welfare and the need for stricter measures in handling such sensitive matters in South African communities.
