Cripps’ late goal seals Carlton upset over Geelong in MCG thriller
Geelong coach Chris Scott has raised concerns about the AFL’s score review system following a contentious decision in their narrow loss to Carlton at the MCG.Early in the game, a potential first goal for Geelong was ruled a rushed behind by goal umpire David Rodan.
The call prevented the AFL’s review centre (ARC) from intervening under the current rules, which were recently changed to avoid lengthy delays in reviewing decisions.
Scott expressed frustration that the technology exists to correct obvious errors but was not utilised in this instance, calling it a 'howler' that should have been picked up immediately.
Despite the controversial call, Scott emphasised that Carlton’s strong performance, particularly around stoppages and in transition, was the key factor in the four-point defeat.
He acknowledged the Blues’ dominance under caretaker coach Josh Fraser and highlighted the efforts of players like Jagga Smith, Will Hayward, and skipper Patrick Cripps in orchestrating Carlton’s comeback.
While Scott refrained from publicly criticising the AFL, he questioned whether the review process is fit for purpose and urged that clear mistakes should be corrected by the technology already in place. The loss ends Geelong’s strong run but keeps them in premiership contention, with the ARC debate likely to remain a talking point.
