CNN Panelists Clash Over Texas Senate Race Between James Talarico and Ken Paxton

cnn

A heated debate broke out on CNN between Democratic strategist Paul Begala and conservative commentator Scott Jennings over the political prospects of Texas State Representative James Talarico, who is expected to challenge Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for a U.S.Senate seat.

During the discussion, Jennings criticized Talarico’s political positions, including his views on transgender issues, religion, and dietary choices, arguing that such positions would make it difficult for him to succeed in Texas politics.Begala strongly pushed back against Jennings’ criticisms and accused Republicans of being worried about Talarico’s growing popularity.

In a dramatic moment, Begala said he could “smell the fear” coming from Republicans and claimed that Talarico was becoming more popular than Donald Trump in Texas. He repeatedly argued that Republicans wanted to focus on cultural issues while voters were more concerned about economic problems. The conversation then shifted toward economic frustrations among Texans.Begala highlighted the rising cost of living, mentioning the price of hamburgers as an example of how inflation affects ordinary people. He also criticized Ken Paxton’s financial success while serving in public office, questioning how Paxton became wealthy on a government salary.

Jennings attempted to challenge Begala’s arguments and tone during the exchange, but Begala continued emphasizing that economic concerns would be central in the upcoming Senate race.

The segment reflected the broader political divide over whether cultural or economic issues will dominate voter priorities in Texas during the 2026 election cycle.

this whole cnn debate is just culture-war noise. paxton’s wealth while on govt pay stinks, tbh. voters care bout rent, food prices, wages. dems/reps both dodge class issues and keep it theater. overall fr smh

This is the same recycled cable-news shouting match while Texans deal with rent and groceries. Both sides lean on culture war distractions, but Paxton’s record and Talarico’s hype won’t matter much if voters are just trying to afford basics.
