Rick Scott Invites Trump to Senate GOP Lunch Amid Tensions With Majority Leader John Thune
CNN correspondent Tom Foreman provided an update on the ongoing controversy surrounding the renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, a project promoted by President Donald Trump.
The renovation, which reportedly cost about $14 million, has faced multiple setbacks after the pool developed a significant algae bloom shortly after being refilled following a repainting effort. The painted surface has also shown signs of deterioration.Foreman discussed the arrest of several individuals accused of removing loose pieces of material from the damaged pool.Among those arrested was former Olympian David Hearn, who said he merely reached into the water to examine material that was already coming loose.Hearn, who described himself as a material scientist, argued that he did not intentionally damage the structure.
Foreman questioned whether such arrests were justified, noting that maintenance workers have been walking through and cleaning the pool for days as part of repair efforts.According to the report, authorities are still struggling to control the algae problem.Despite ongoing cleanup operations, algae remained present as of the latest update.Officials are reportedly considering draining the entire pool and restarting remediation efforts, a move that could increase public costs.
Foreman also highlighted Trump's previous criticism of earlier presidential administrations, noting that Trump had claimed he could complete improvements for less than $2 million. However, the project ultimately cost several times that amount and continues to face operational and maintenance challenges.
The situation has drawn public attention ahead of planned July 4 celebrations, with questions remaining about whether the pool will be fully restored in time.
