A devastating fire broke out at the Coal Yard Informal Settlement in Emalahleni, Msunduzi Municipality, on Sunday morning, resulting in one fatality and displacing 66 residents.The blaze, which started at 4:29am, affected approximately 22 households.Ward 32 councillor Garth Middleton coordinated emergency responses, including contacting the fire department and disaster management teams.The deceased, a 25-year-old man, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while others sustained minor injuries.Disaster management teams provided immediate relief, including supplies and temporary shelter, with ongoing support from social services and donors.The incident highlights urgent housing needs, as the Emalahleni Coal Yard Housing Project remains delayed.

Provincial authorities, including MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, pledged continued support and emphasized the importance of community safety measures to prevent future tragedies.The municipality also urged residents to exercise caution with open flames and heating devices, especially in densely populated areas.This incident follows a similar fire in the Jika Joe Informal Settlement two weeks prior, underscoring persistent challenges in informal settlements.
