Tilman Fertitta's planned America 250 yacht visit to Venice sparks local protests ahead of historic festival
A display featuring Confederate flag imagery at the North Carolina exhibit during the Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., sparked widespread criticism after a video of the exhibit circulated online.
The footage, recorded and shared by Spectrum News Washington correspondent Reuben Jones, showed multiple Confederate flags appearing on television screens inside the booth.
According to Jones, North Carolina had declined to officially participate in the fair because of the event's costs, leaving the exhibit to be organized by private sponsors.
Following the video's publication, North Carolina officials quickly distanced themselves from the display, stating that the Confederate imagery had not been approved and did not represent the state's values.
The governor's office emphasized that the America 250 celebration is intended to promote national unity rather than glorify divisive historical symbols. One of the exhibit's sponsors, Mt.
Olive Pickle Company, announced it was withdrawing from the event, explaining that it had been unaware the Confederate flag would be included in the exhibit and reaffirming its commitment to human dignity, opportunity, and freedom.
Governor Josh Stein later stated that organizers had removed the flag from the exhibit and reiterated that North Carolina's own America 250 celebrations would focus on equality, freedom, and inclusion.
The controversy highlighted the continuing public debate over Confederate symbols and the challenges of representing state history during national commemorative events.
