Court Dismisses Sowore's Request to Postpone Cyberbullying Trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected Omoyele Sowore's application to delay his trial over alleged cyberbullying of President Bola Tinubu.Sowore's lawyer, Raphael Adakole, argued that the defense stage should be postponed until after the court's annual vacation, citing the lead counsel's unavailability.

However, the court emphasized its earlier order for an accelerated trial under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015, and denied the adjournment request. The case, initiated by the Department of State Services (DSS), has already faced 10 previous adjournments at Sowore's request. The judge directed Sowore to appear in court on July 16 for the continuation of his defense.

During the trial, Sowore's first witness, Deji Adeyanju, testified that President Tinubu had previously stated citizens have the right to criticize him, and law enforcement should protect such freedoms.Adeyanju also admitted to past legal representation of Sowore and social media comments about his experiences with arrest. The court's decision underscores the urgency of the trial and the legal framework governing criminal proceedings in Nigeria.
