PREMIUM TIMES reports on confidential investigation documents filed as part of ongoing criminal and military proceedings over an alleged failed coup plot against President Bola Tinubu.

According to the prosecution's case, a serving police inspector attached to the Presidential Villa, Ahmed Ibrahim, allegedly became a point of contact for some of the suspected conspirators after they looked for ways to gain access to the heavily protected presidential complex.

Investigators allege that the officer was approached to help the group gain entry into the Villa but that he instead decided to deceive them by making them believe he could assist while collecting money from them.

His statement to investigators claims he received different cash transfers, gifts and financial support, including money ahead of his wedding, while never intending to provide the promised access.

The documents also allege that he escorted two serving major-generals around parts of the Presidential Villa, with prosecutors treating those movements as reconnaissance linked to the alleged plot.Investigators further claim members of the network used coded language when discussing troops, money, government targets and the planned operation.

The report also says the alleged conspiracy had earlier plans dating back to the 2023 presidential inauguration before it was reportedly revived with fresh funding.However, all the allegations remain unproven in court.

The accused persons, including retired military officers, civilians and the police inspector, have all pleaded not guilty and are challenging the admissibility of their statements while separate proceedings continue before the Federal High Court and a General Court Martial.
