The Court of Appeal has overturned a 2022 judgment that allowed Muslim girls to wear hijabs as part of their school uniform at the International School, University of Ibadan (ISI).

The appellate court ruled that ISI, classified as a private institution, is not bound by the Supreme Court's existing decision allowing hijab in public schools.This decision has prompted the school to direct students to comply with its uniform policy from July 6, 2026, prohibiting hijabs with uniforms.MURIC, which supported the original suit, has appealed to the Supreme Court to halt enforcement while the case is reviewed.The dispute dates back to 2018 when Muslim students challenged ISI's ban on headscarves.In 2022, a state court ruled in their favor, citing constitutional rights, but the appeal led to Friday's ruling.Justice Georgewill argued students waived religious rights by agreeing to school rules upon enrollment, while Justice Umar dissented.The ruling has sparked debate over whether federally funded schools can selectively apply constitutional protections.Critics argue private institutions should not enforce dress codes against religious beliefs, while others defend their autonomy.
