Switzerland face Algeria in World Cup knockout clash as Petkovic meets former team
Cricket Ireland president Bryan O’Donnell has said that Ireland’s recent 2-0 T20 International series win over India in Belfast will significantly boost the team’s global reputation and make them a more ‘acceptable’ opponent in international cricket.
The victory, which marked Ireland’s first-ever series win over the reigning T20 world champions in any format, is expected to improve opportunities for Irish players in higher-level competitions and strengthen the overall perception of Irish cricket.
O’Donnell stated that the win would have an immediate positive impact on player confidence and performance levels, while also helping Irish cricketers gain more exposure in global leagues and tournaments.
He emphasised that Cricket Ireland’s ongoing investments, supported by the ICC, in infrastructure and development programmes are beginning to show results.
He also highlighted the importance of upcoming initiatives such as the European T20 Premier League, where involvement of former international stars is expected to help Irish players learn and grow by interacting with experienced professionals.According to him, such exposure could open new income streams and development pathways for players. While welcoming Ireland’s progress in white-ball cricket, O’Donnell acknowledged ongoing challenges in red-ball cricket.
Since becoming a Test nation in 2018, Ireland have played limited Test matches and continue to struggle for consistent opportunities and domestic red-ball structure. He noted that improving this area remains a priority, with discussions ongoing about possible revival of longer-format domestic competitions.
Overall, O’Donnell described the win over India as a landmark moment that could elevate Irish cricket’s status internationally while also highlighting areas that still require long-term development.
