Cyclist takes legal action against Enfield Council after severe injuries caused by bike lane barrier

A cyclist from Edmonton, north London, is taking legal action against Enfield Council following a serious accident in which he sustained multiple injuries after colliding with a bike lane barrier.

Greg Simmons, a 36-year-old screenwriter, was riding in February last year when he attempted to pass a bus travelling within a cycle lane on Hertford Road.

During the manoeuvre, he struck a plastic cycle lane divider which, according to his legal team, lacked the usual warning poles or reflective markers intended to make such safety features visible to cyclists. The impact caused him to be thrown from his bicycle, resulting in fractures to both elbows and his jaw.

Mr Simmons has stated that the injuries have had a lasting impact on his mobility, leaving him unable to fully straighten his left arm more than a year after the incident.

He argues that the design and inconsistent installation of the lane dividers created a significant hazard for cyclists, particularly because some barriers in the same area are fitted with warning poles while others are not.

He believes the lack of visibility contributed directly to the crash and has described the situation as potentially life-threatening, noting that he was fortunate not to have been struck by traffic.

His legal representatives, Osborne Law, claim the council is responsible for installing an unsafe road feature, while Enfield Council has declined to comment due to ongoing legal proceedings. The case highlights broader concerns about cycle lane safety and the consistency of road infrastructure designed to protect cyclists in London.
