Day 2 of Sara Duterte Impeachment Trial Focuses on Grave Threats Allegation and Initial Presentation of Evidence

The Senate impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte entered its second day on July 7, 2026, with House prosecutors preparing to begin presenting evidence under Article IV of the Articles of Impeachment, which deals with allegations of grave threats.

The proceedings followed the first day of the trial, which was largely devoted to organisational matters, including the election of Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero as presiding officer, the formal appearance of both the prosecution and defence teams, and procedural rulings governing the conduct of the trial.

During the opening day, both camps delivered their opening statements, while the impeachment court denied the prosecution’s motion to immediately read the Articles of Impeachment and arraign the Vice President.

Prosecutors also announced the sequence in which they would present the four impeachment articles, beginning with the grave threats allegation, followed by confidential funds, bribery, and unexplained wealth.

On Tuesday, Vice President Duterte arrived at the Senate to meet with her legal team but, according to defence spokesperson Michael Poa, she would not attend the actual trial proceedings.Senate officials confirmed that her office had coordinated her arrival with the impeachment court.

Members of the defence team also arrived ahead of the session, while House prosecutors expressed readiness to begin presenting witnesses and evidence. The impeachment court also issued subpoenas to National Bureau of Investigation officials expected to testify for the prosecution.

Throughout the proceedings, Senate officials reiterated their commitment to due process, impartiality, and adherence to constitutional procedures as the historic impeachment trial continued.
