A sessions court in Karachi has sentenced a man to death for his role in the 2019 murder of TV anchor Mureed Abbas and his friend Khizer Hayat.The incident occurred in the Khayaban-i-Bukhari area on July 9, 2019, when Abbas and Hayat were shot during what was initially described as a personal dispute.Prime suspect Atif Zaman and his brother Adil Zaman were arrested and booked for the crime.

Daniyal Muhammad Hussain, part of Abbas’s legal team, revealed that Adil Zaman had become an absconder after his bail was canceled by the Supreme Court.Abbas, a prominent anchor for Bol News, was fatally wounded in the attack, while Hayat survived but later succumbed to his injuries.The case was transferred from an anti-terrorism court to a sessions court in 2019, as the former deemed the offense outside its jurisdiction.

The death sentence marks a significant legal resolution for the victims’ families and highlights ongoing challenges in prosecuting high-profile crimes in Karachi.
