Defense Secretary Teodoro Dismisses Chinese Sanctions and Reaffirms Commitment to Philippine Interests

MANILA, Philippines — Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr.dismissed sanctions imposed by the Chinese government against him and his immediate family, saying the measures would not affect his commitment to serving the country.

In a statement released on June 12, 2026, Teodoro said China was exercising its own prerogative and claimed the sanctions were directed at individuals who speak out against what he described as Chinese deception.

He stressed that he would continue performing his responsibilities and defending Philippine national interests, particularly in relation to developments in the West Philippine Sea.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Teodoro, his spouse, and their child are prohibited from entering mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao. The ministry also barred Chinese organizations and individuals from conducting business transactions, cooperation, or other activities with them.

Beijing justified the sanctions by accusing Teodoro of repeatedly making remarks that allegedly harmed China’s interests and bilateral relations with the Philippines. The action comes amid continuing maritime disputes between the two countries.Teodoro has consistently criticized China’s actions in contested waters and has rejected Beijing’s expansive claims in the West Philippine Sea.

Earlier reports had already suggested that restrictions were being considered against him and his family, which he previously downplayed, noting that he had no assets in China and no plans to visit the country. The sanctions are considered unusual because they target a sitting Philippine Cabinet official.

They follow similar actions taken by Beijing against officials from Kalayaan, Palawan, and previous sanctions imposed on former senator Francis Tolentino. The development highlights ongoing diplomatic tensions between Manila and Beijing over territorial and security issues.
